Novak Djokovic, who turned 36 years and 321 days today, broke another record of Roger Federer. The Serb became the oldest player in the history of tennis to be ranked World No. 1.
Federer, who retired in 2022, became the oldest No. 1 ranked player in 2018. Djokovic broke many records of the Swiss maestro and becoming the oldest No. 1 ranked player was just one of them.
Djokovic, who has displayed some unparalleled longevity, holds the record of staying at the top of the rankings for the most seasons. Also, he has now started his 419th week as No. 1.
The 36-year-old displayed how hard work, proper training and recovery, and proper diet, while also taking care of his mental health and well-being by practicing mindfulness can keep an athlete in good shape despite being in their 30s. Since turning 30 in 2017, Djokovic has won 12 Grand Slam crowns, 31 tour-level titles, 10 Masters 1000 trophies, and seven ATP Final trophies.
Despite clinching 24 Grand Slam titles and breaking many records, one prestigious title the Serb has not yet won is an Olympic gold. The Paris Olympics will be played on clay soil this year and Djokovic is aiming for a gold medal.
“The Paris Olympics are very important – the Olympics have always been a priority for me. But in the last three or four Olympics, it’s not been possible for me to reach the latter stages [the final]. The situation is a bit different now. We are playing our first Olympics on clay. I want to be ready physically and mentally.” Novak Djokovic said.
The Paris Olympics will get underway in July after the conclusion of Roland Garros. Before that, Djokovic will also be playing at Wimbledon, but he said that these Grand Slam titles will be a bonus for him as he wants to reach his peak for the Olympics.
However, Djokovic has won an Olympic medal—a bronze at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. At the 2012 London Olympics, he finished fourth. Then, in Rio and Tokyo, he lost in the first round and finished fourth, respectively.
Djokovic last played at Indian Wells and missed the Miami Open. He will next play at the Monte-Carlo Masters.
