Roger Federer, the 20-time Grand Slam champion, sheds light on his surprising contentment with being the first member of the legendary “Big 3” to retire.
Federer, now 42, acknowledges the emotional weight of his final matches. Battling right knee issues during his later years, his last singles outing came at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. While the 2022 Laver Cup marked his official farewell, it was a tearful goodbye. Federer and long-time rival Rafael Nadal both shed tears, and his retirement cemented his place as the first of the “Big 3” to step away from the sport.
Federer sheds light on his perspective, recalling his early career where he flourished before Nadal, Djokovic, and Murray became dominant forces. He views his retirement as a natural passing of the torch: “I had the time without them on tour… now it’s their time to have a moment on tour without me.” This selfless outlook emphasizes his respect for his rivals and his desire to see them continue their legacies.
Federer’s well wishes for his rivals extend beyond mere courtesy. He acknowledges the uncertainties surrounding Murray’s hip and Nadal’s knees. “I’m happy I was the first to go,” he reiterates, “And actually I wish that they can go on for as long as I did.” This genuine concern and support highlight the camaraderie that exists between these fierce competitors.
With Murray and Djokovic at 36 and Nadal at 37, Federer’s retirement doesn’t mark the immediate end of an era. However, it signifies a significant shift. The remaining members of the “Big 3” can undoubtedly continue to challenge for titles, but Federer’s absence leaves a void and prompts questions about how long they will maintain their dominance. The future of tennis is wide open, with a new generation waiting to claim their own victories on the grandest stages.
