Roger Federer, the name synonymous with elegance on the court and grace off it, recently opened up about his life after retiring from professional tennis. For many, Federer’s identity seemed to be inextricably linked to his legendary status in the sport.
However, the 20-time Grand Slam champion himself reveals a deeper truth: his family life has always been his core, even amidst the pressures of his monumental tennis career.
In an interview with GQ Sports, Federer sheds light on his perspective. “Tennis was my identity, but it was not what I was doing all day every day,” he explains. “I mean, for the most part, I’m being more of a dad and a husband and a son. Being a tennis player was my hobby, and then that became my job.”
This statement emphasizes that while tennis became his career, his true identity rested with his family. He consciously avoided solely defining himself through his athletic achievements.
This conscious effort to cultivate a life beyond the court appears to have served him well. “When tennis was taken away or put aside, well, I still had all the other things,” Federer continues. “And I think that mindset has anyway been a strength of mine throughout my career.” This foresight allowed him to face the reality of retirement with a sense of stability and purpose. He understood that his life’s value wouldn’t diminish with the end of his playing days.
Federer’s dedication to his family extends beyond mere words. He reveals a surprising discomfort with solitude. “I’ve had maybe two afternoons since my retirement where I’ve been at home alone,” he admits. “I don’t know,” he adds, “it was awkward enough. So let’s not have those moments. Let’s not do that anymore. Let’s not do that again.” This confession highlights the joy he finds in being surrounded by his loved ones, suggesting a life richly filled with family connections.
His appreciation for time also seems to have deepened post-retirement. “I feel minutes matter more now than before,” he says. Perhaps this newfound awareness stems from his age, but it could also be driven by the desire to dedicate more time to his family and other passions.
Retirement hasn’t just seen Federer embracing family life; it has also opened doors to explore other avenues. His attendance at high-profile events like the Met Gala and the Academy Awards showcases his desire to engage with the world beyond the realm of tennis.
Roger Federer’s journey reminds us that professional athletes are multifaceted individuals. They are not solely defined by their sport. His story offers a glimpse into the life of a champion who prioritizes family, cherishes time, and embraces new opportunities. It’s a story that transcends the boundaries of the tennis court, offering a relatable and inspiring perspective on life after the spotlight.
