Serena Williams’ legacy stretches far beyond the tennis court. Since retiring in September 2022, she’s shifted her focus to the investment arena, leveraging her over-a-decade-long experience to empower underrepresented founders.
Championing Diversity Through Venture Capital
In 2014, Williams took a pivotal step by launching Serena Ventures, a venture capital firm specifically designed to support women and minority entrepreneurs. Fueled by her discovery of the stark lack of venture capital directed towards these demographics, she envisioned Serena Ventures as a catalyst for change. As their website reveals, the company boasts a portfolio where 79% of founders are underrepresented, 54% are women, 47% are Black, and 11% are Latino.
A Passion Ignited by Inequality
“Less than 2% of all VC money went to women,” Williams revealed in a TikTok video. This revelation sparked a fire within her, prompting her to take action. “[I wanted] to raise money and invest in women,” she stated, recognizing the disparity and its impact on potential businesses.
Her dedication hasn’t faltered.
Investing in the Future, Full-Time
Williams, ever determined, has invested in over 85 companies according to TikTok. Her portfolio boasts impressive names like HUED (a healthcare startup) and Parfait (an AI-powered wig customization platform), both spearheaded by Black women.
Her keen eye for potential extends beyond diversity. She also invested in MasterClass (an edtech company valued at $2.75 billion in 2021) and companies like Impossible Foods (plant-based meat substitute), Noom (subscription-based weight loss app), and Karat (talent acquisition platform for engineers).
The Midas Touch: 14 Unicorns and Counting
Williams’ investment prowess shines beyond individual successes. An estimated 14 companies in her portfolio have achieved “unicorn” status. This term, as defined by Fortune, refers to private startups valued at $1 billion or more. Unicorns are seen as disruptive and innovative forces with high growth potential. Examples include Uber, Airbnb, and Pinterest.
For the 14 companies Williams has championed, reaching unicorn status is a significant milestone. This financial backing empowers them to expand their reach and achieve ambitious goals.
Serena Williams’ dedication to empowering underrepresented founders through her investment strategies extends her legacy far beyond the world of tennis. She’s a champion for diversity and innovation, paving the way for a more inclusive future.
