Rapper Lil Wayne was charged in federal court with illegal possession of weapons and ammunition, facing a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.

According to NPR, on November 17, the Florida court decided to prosecute the male singer. Late last year, Lil Wayne was discovered carrying a gun when his private plane landed at an airport in Miami.

Prosecutors said the singer intentionally violated the law despite a previous court ban. In 2009, Lil Wayne was prosecuted for illegal weapons possession in New York and had to spend eight months in prison.

The singer’s lawyer said: “There is no evidence that Wayne used it, showed it off or threatened to use it. There is no basis to accuse him of being a danger to society. The sentence was given by Carter who once has a criminal record and is prohibited from possessing weapons.” Lil Wayne said the gun was a gift he prepared for Father’s Day.

Airport security staff said they also discovered some illegal stimulants in Lil Wayne’s luggage. However, the rapper was not prosecuted for this crime.

Lil Wayne, born in 1982, is considered one of the most famous rappers in the world for more than two decades. He has sold more than 120 million records and won five Grammy awards. Lil Wayne has a fortune of about $150 million. Besides singing, he works as a director of a record label. In January, he released the album Funeral, which topped the US market.
