Jeremy Renner committed a big no-no in the Marvel universe, and Scarlett Johansson couldn’t hide her surprise.

Scarlett Johansson has always been a versatile actress. Her ability to transform into any role made her Marvel Cinematic Universe character, Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow, made her endearing and a fan-favorite — it also significantly increased the net worth of Scarlett Johansson.

When entering the MCU, actors are made to sign contracts that restrict them from doing things, saying things, and generally ruining the whole Marvel concept. For Scarlett Johansson, this seemed to be the rule for all things studio-related, but the actress is figuring out she could have gotten away with something thanks to former co-star, Jeremy Renner, who already did.

Scarlett Johansson did not know she could wear her costume outside movie sets — Jeremy Renner did. Johansson also didn’t know what she could say or not say, as the studio did not explicitly talk about the thing in between. However, being a by-the-book girl, she just kept it all to herself.

It was a total shock for Scarlett Johansson to learn that Jeremy Renner had worn his Marvel costume for Halloween. Finding out Jeremy Renner wore his during her guest appearance on The Kelly Clarkson show made the Marvel hero rethink what she knew she could and couldn’t do.

“When Jeremy Renner was here he was talking about how he used his Hawkeye costume for Halloween. Have you ever done that?” Kelly Clarkson asked.

“What?” Johansson exclaimed, looking surprised.

“You’ve never done that? I would totally do that.” Clarkson said.

“That’s allowed? Marvel never told me I could do that,” Scarlett revealed.

“I feel like Jeremy maybe says, sorry, doesn’t ask permission. Maybe he’s one of those people.”

“Yeah. You’re actually right. That’s definitely… [Renner],” Scarlett said.

Jeremy Renner’s Instagram post of that fateful moment has him suiting up as Hawkeye because his daughter asked for it, and he had no choice but to comply. The video showed Hawkeye’s bow and arrows on a table and Renner simply said, “Happy Halloween.”

In the caption, Renner wrote: “I couldn’t say no to my daughter and her friends! SUIT up once again.” The moment was heartwarming, but it looks like only Jeremy Renner could have pulled it off.

If Black Widow knew she could be let outside the set, Scarlett Johansson could have used it to win more brownie points with her daughter Rose Dorothy, who prefers her being Black Widow when it benefits her.

While Scarlett Johansson may not like being asked about her tight outfit, it doesn’t mean she wouldn’t have loved to cosplay as her Black Widow character for Halloween.

On whether she could pull off Jeremy Renner’s bold move, Scarlett Johansson knows she is definitely not that kind of person.

“I am very by the books. I worked for Marvel for 10 years, and I was constantly terrified I was going to spoil some[thing] major — anything from the color of my [suit], that it’s like now a darker shade of Navy it was like, you can’t say a thing. I’m sort of programmed to [never say anything].”

“Sounds a little abusive, but yeah, you’re programmed. I don’t do well with secrets or anything like that, so I would hate that,” Clarkson said.

“There were definitely cast members like, you know, they were really really bad at it. They are like a liability.”

Scarlett Johansson being tight-lipped about all things Marvel is not too far-fetched, as the cinematic universe is often plagued with leaks. And with the extreme ways Marvel prevented leaks of their movies, it was a good job of Johansson to keep quiet.

However, some Marvel fans think Scarlett Johansson was responsible for the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer, seeing that Scarlett Johansson and Disney were embroiled in a lawsuit for breach of contract.

Although mostly taken as a joke, some fans took to X (Twitter) to speculate if the trailer leak was done by Scarlett, who was at odds with Disney and also played a spy in the franchise who leaked top secrets in Captain America: Winter Soldier.

How the trailer leak related to Johansson was never confirmed, and it most likely wouldn’t have been The Nanny Diaries actress because that is not her style.
