In basketball, stats are a measure of a player’s greatness. Players with high scores in many categories are always highly appreciated. And no index honors a player’s comprehensiveness better than “five by five”.

In today’s basketball, triple-doubles have become more common and are no longer too difficult for players to achieve, especially in the NBA. However, “five by five” is still a rare stat and not many players can achieve it.

So what is “five by five”? How many players have ever made “five by five” in NBA history?

What is “Five by five” in basketball?

“Five by five” is established when a player reaches a score of 5 with points, rebounds, assists, blocks and steals. The NBA only started recording blocks and steals in the 1973/74 season, so previous seasons cannot be counted. If not, it’s likely that Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell will be in the “five by five” history books.

How rare is “Five by five” in the NBA?

Since the 1973/74 season until now, there have only been  22 matches with “five by five” appearing, all in the Regular season.  6 of which belong to legendary Houston Rockets striker Hakeem Olajuwon. He is the person with the most “five by five” in NBA history. Except for him, only Andrei Kirilenko has more than once achieved “five by five” with 3 times.

That’s not all. Olajuwon is also the only player to have recorded  a triple-double  while also achieving the “five by five” achievement. Another time, he almost achieved a “five by five” double-double once.

George Johnson was the first player to reach Five by five in an NBA game. Victor Wembanyama is the closest. Spurs’ super rookie became the youngest player ever and the second rookie to achieve this unusual parameter.
